The Montezuma County Board of County Commissioners continues to actively monitor and address the sawdust/chip pile located at Ironwood Mill.  Specifically, the Board has been working with the Colorado Department of Health and Environment’s Hazardous Materials Waste Division (CDPHE) to bring the pile into compliance.

On March 10, 2022, CDPHE provided Ironwood with a letter indicating that the sawdust/chip pile failed to meet the minimum standards of the Solid Wastes Disposal Sites and Facilities Act as well as Regulations Pertaining to Solid Waste Sites and Facilities.  Specifically, the letter required Ironwood to undertake the following actions:

  1. Provide CDPHE with a written response within 30 days outlining actions to be taken to remedy issues with the pile.
  2. Schedule a Compliance Conference within 45 days to discuss a schedule and plan for remedying violations occurring on the Ironwood property.
  3. Complete removal of the sawdust/chip pile no later than June 15, 2022.

Montezuma County will continue to work with CDPHE to ensure that Ironwood complies with CDPHE’s requests and alleviates the sawdust/chip pile located at the Ironwood Mill site.  In the event that Ironwood fails to comply, CDPHE and/or Montezuma County will consider pursuing legal actions to force Ironwood to bring its property into environmental compliance.
