The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) have determined that certain wastes are not permitted at the Montezuma County Landfill.
In addition, the county has added items not addressed by either EPA or CDPHE to the banned list.
These bans are in place to reduce potential health or environmental hazards.
Items Not Accepted
Antifreeze (see Liquid Waste below)
Automobile batteries (lead-acid)
Biomedical or biohazardous waste
Households may have some exceptions — call the landfill to confirm.
Veterinarians, dental and doctor clinics, nursing homes, hospitals, assisted living facilities, and similar places may treat waste to make it non-infectious, but county approval is still required.
Electronic waste (e-waste): computers, accessories, items with chips (e.g., cell phones), and television monitors
Effective January 1, 2017, all sources (commercial, industrial, institutional, residential) must recycle e-waste.
E-waste is accepted during regular business hours and sent to certified vendors (ISO 14001, R2, e-steward).
Material will not be exported to third world countries or improperly handled.
Hot ashes (burn barrels may contain embers even after 14 days)
Industrial process waste not pre-approved by the county or CDPHE
Requires MSDS documentation and laboratory analysis.
