Adult Protection Services

Older Adults and people who have severe underlying chronic medical conditions like heart or lung disease or diabetes seem to be at higher risk for developing more serious complications from COVID-19 illness ( Montezuma County’s APS caseworkers interact with a large volume of higher-risk clients. Montezuma County Adult Protection Services is limiting physical contact in an effort to maintain sanitary precautions and recommendations in regards to the COVID-19 pandemic. This precaution is necessary for keeping not only our staff safe but our clients as well. We are encouraging the use of telephone, facsimile, and electronic mail in regards to conducting business and maintaining communication between the client’s caseworker and the various agencies involved with the client on established cases. The referral process may be completed by telephone, or through encrypted e-mail.

Adult Protective Services (APS) receives reports of abuse, neglect, and exploitation of at-risk adults conducts an investigation into the allegations, and implements services to reduce and prevent further mistreatment.​ The Montezuma County APS program:
  • Receives reports of mistreatment, which includes physical abuse, sexual abuse, caretaker neglect, exploitation and self-neglect;
  • Investigate allegations and conduct an assessment of the client’s strengths and needs; and
  • Arrange for needed services to reduce risk and improve safety.

At-risk adults are defined as persons age 18 or older who are susceptible to mistreatment or self-neglect because the adult is unable to perform or obtain services necessary for his or her health, safety, or welfare or because they lack sufficient understanding or capacity to make or communicate responsible decisions concerning their person or affairs. ​​

Reports and Referrals are received from anyone with a concern.  Some positions and professions are Mandated to Report.

There are no charges for our services.

Referrals and Reports are taken in person or over the phone Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. If you need to report caretaker neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, exploitation, or self-neglect of an at-risk adult, after business hours please call local law enforcement.

 If your concerns are an emergency please call 911.
