Property management is critical to the successful prosecution of offenders and for community trust in protecting assets in our care. Strict procedures are necessary for handling and controlling property in the Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office protection. Accountability for seized, found, recovered, and evidentiary property is set by the procedure for security, storage, classification, retrieval, and disposition of items in custody or within the supervision of the Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office.

Evidence obtained through investigation is the means by which any alleged action is proved or disproved. Evidence aids in resolving issues, connecting a subject with an offense, or, in general, establishing facts in a criminal or civil case.

The Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office is accountable for seized, found, recovered, and evidentiary property during the collection, handling, packaging, and storage of property collected and/or seized in the course of official law enforcement operations. We will safeguard and protect the integrity of evidence and preserve the value of all items held belonging to others in the same condition as received. We preserve the evidentiary integrity of the property, leading to the prosecution of accused persons.

FIREARM returns require a Local Background+Criminal History check upon release from the custody of the Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office.

FOUND PROPERTY in the County of Montezuma is placed into safekeeping for 90 days and can be claimed by the owner contacting the evidence technician of the Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office.

However, all vehicle tow charges accrued are the sole responsibility of the registered/owner and will be required to be paid in full before the return/release of any vehicle.

Unpaid Tow Bills / Unclaimed Vehicles will be returned to the original tow company, and they may start to accrue daily storage fees to the tow company until final vehicle disposition.
